CMI's research program

Through our research agenda, we inform discourse regarding the urgent need to deploy zero and negative emissions technologies and the optimal use of carbon markets. Our research outputs are designed to inform more ambitious policy, commitments and practice, accelerate corporate and industrial emission reductions alongside whole-of-economy reductions and removals and advance high integrity carbon crediting frameworks that deliver enduring co-benefits.

Carbon Markets Report

Launched in 2024, the ‘Carbon Markets & Australia’s Net Zero Challenge’ report is the latest addition to CMI’s ongoing research initiative.

The report is the first in a new annual series that examines how Australia’s carbon market is evolving, with the latest insights from a range of experts, including decarbonisation researchers, nature specialists, corporate lawyers, carbon market participants, financial market specialists, technology specialists, and decarbonisation advisors.

Across 10 chapters, the 2024 report explores supply and demand forecasts, current integrity developments and challenges, linkages with nature repair, as well as key developments in market infrastructure.

Carbon Farming Scorecard

In 2022, the inaugural Carbon Farming Scorecard was launched. This scorecard represented the most comprehensive analysis to-date of Australia’s carbon farming policy frameworks.

In 2023, the second iteration of the Carbon Farming Scorecard revealed significant progress across several jurisdictions. However, the report also highlighted ongoing discrepancies in the recognition of carbon farming’s delivery of Indigenous, social, environmental and economic co-benefits for regional communities.

Australian Business Climate Survey

The Australian Business Climate Survey gauges the attitudes of Australian business and industry to understand views on international and domestic policy, carbon markets and pricing, and corporate climate risk, disclosure and strategy. The 10th annual edition of this survey was launched in September 2023.
